Strike dates and Action Short of a Strike

Every single university in the UK will strike on the following dates: November 24th, 25th and 30th

70,000 UCU members will be delivering the biggest picket lines in our history #ucuRISING

Following the overwhelming mandate in the national ballot last month – over 80% of members who voted said ‘yes’ to action – UCU has just announced that we will be taking strike action on:

  • Thursday 24 November
  • Friday 25 November
  • Wednesday 30 November (with a national demonstration at Kings Cross in London)

Alongside this we will be commencing ASOS (Action Short of a Strike) to commence on Wednesday 23 November. This means that we are asking all members to:

  • work to contract (meaning that you only fulfil the duties explicitly expressed in your contract)
  • not undertake voluntary activities
  • not cover for absent colleagues
  • refuse to reschedule classes missed due to industrial action
  • remove materials for classes that would have taken place on strike days from online learning platforms.

Tens of thousands of staff at 150 universities nationwide will be taking action. It’s vital we make our strike at UH as effective as possible.

Employers across the country need to see we’re determined, strong and united. That’s how they’ll agree to meaningful negotiations over pay and working conditions.

Picketing and all members meeting

We’ll need to organise well-supported picket lines on strike days and we’d encourage as many members as possible to join them. To discuss picketing arrangements and the other action we’re taking, we’re holding an all members meeting next Tuesday, 15 November at 12 noon.

It’s an important meeting so please attend if you possibly can. We want to hear your ideas about making our strike at UH as effective as possible. The link for joining the meeting is below.

Leafletting

Also next Tuesday, 15 November, after our all members meeting, we’re going to leaflet the De Havilland campus. If you’d like to join us, please meet at the main reception at 2:00pm.

Finally, this is an opportunity for each and every one of us to spread the word and encourage colleagues to join UCU and the strike action!

In solidarity
